What to Do in the Event of an Auto Accident

Move out of the way of traffic and turn on your hazard warning lights.

Call the police even in a minor accident. If someone is injured, request medical assistance.

If fire is involved, request fire department aid.

Do not discuss the accident with anyone other than the police or your insurance agent. Do not admit fault or offer money to another party.

Exchange necessary information with the other driver(s). Be sure to write down the other driver's name, address, phone number, license plate number and insurance information. Also write down the contact information of all witnesses.

Report the accident to your insurance company via the Claims Department they will need the following information:

Date of accident
Description of accident
Description of injuries
Vehicle information for other driver(s)
Damage to the vehicle(s)
Name and phone number of any witnesses
A police report, if filed

Report your claim even if you do not have all of this information. Contact your agent for further information.

What to Do in the Event of a Loss to Your Home

Going back into your home after a loss can be dangerous. Wind and water damage may cause structural, electrical and other hazards. Physical dangers are not always obvious. In the event of a break-in or theft, do not enter your home until the police have arrived.
Promptly report the loss, call the police if necessary.

Protect property from further damage by arranging for reasonable temporary repairs as soon as possible. For example, if windows are broken, have them boarded up to protect your home and property against vandalism or weather damage.

Keep an accurate record of all temporary repair expenses (e.g., bills and/or material receipts) so that you can add the amount to your claim. Also, keep an accurate record of any and all expenses incurred to be considered for possible reimbursement. Do not make any permanent repairs until an insurance adjuster has had a chance to review the damage.

Determine the damage to your personal property (contents). Make a written list of what was damaged. To be as accurate as possible, please include the manufacturer, brand name and the place and date of purchase. We recommend beginning this process by dividing your list into broad categories such as location (e.g., living room, bedroom #1, bedroom #2). If available, photographs, videotapes or personal property inventories are valuable resources during the itemization process.

Separate damaged and undamaged property. In order to complete a full assessment of the loss, your insurance company may want to inspect damaged property, do not throw anything you would like to place a claim on away.

What to Do When Returning to Your Home After a Storm:

Follow all emergency rules, laws and regulations, use common sense.

Do not walk or drive through standing waters.

Do not enter your home if it appears to be structurally unsound.

Stay clear of power and electrical lines.

Turn off electrical and gas sources in your house, even if the service is off in your area.
If a door sticks, it could mean the ceiling is sagging. If you force the door open, pause to allow debris to fall (falling wet plaster/wall board is heavy and dangerous).

Secure the exterior of your home by boarding up broken windows and padlocking broken doors, etc.

Do not drink water from public supplies until the local authorities indicate it is safe to do so.

Do not smoke or ignite a flame due to possible combustible gases in the air.

Use battery-powered lanterns and flashlights instead of candles.
